The Importance of Taking Pictures after an Accident

As any experienced personal injury attorney will explain, gathering evidence for your personal injury action begins immediately after the accident takes place. Assuming you are physically able, you should try and take as many pictures as possible immediately after your accident, collision or injury-causing event. This will help in the future as your attorney begins to craft arguments for your case and may serve to jog your memory in the weeks and months following the wreck.

Camera Settings

If you are using a digital camera to take pictures, set the camera to use the maximum number of pixels. This way, if your personal injury attorney needs to enlarge your picture for an exhibit, it will not be grainy or blurry.

You should take pictures from the perspective of the driver. If feasible and safe, take pictures from inside your vehicle, facing the accident. Do not use the zoom lens during this activity as you will want an accurate portrayal of the driver’s vantage point, not an up-close picture.

Picture Checklist

– View of Traffic Control Signs: Once the accident is cleared and you are able to find assistance from another driver, take the same route you just took and take pictures as you approach the accident scene, beginning about two blocks away. Repeat this process from the vantage point of all drivers involved.

– Vantage Point: Take two pictures at driver’s level of the scene of the accident from about 200 feet away. Take one picture from driver #1’s vantage point and one from the perspective of driver #2. Repeat this process 100 feet away and 25 feet away.

– Tire Marks or Debris: If the little time has passed since the incident, photograph any tire marks or debris in the roadway. If the accident occurred near roadway construction, document the condition of the roads, whether any equipment is in the way and any other possible obstructions.
